# Review of Romans 1 Simplified Version
I’ll work through each of the seven criteria systematically.
## 1. EVERYDAY LANGUAGE ✓
The simplified version consistently uses 6th-8th grade vocabulary and sentence structure. Sentences are shorter, active voice dominates, and abstract concepts are explained in concrete terms:
– “worship the creature rather than the Creator” → kept but contextualized with “glory” and “lesser things”
– “obedience of faith” → “Faith trusts Christ, bows to Him, and begins to walk in His ways”
– “suppresses the truth” → “resist what God has made known”
A few inherited terms remain from the Bible text itself (“reprobate mind,” “vile passions,” “covenant breakers,” “ordinance of God”), but these are explained in context and unavoidable when the verses themselves use them.
## 2. INSIGHT COMPLETENESS ✓
All major deeper insights from the Standard version are preserved:
– Gospel as old promise + new fulfillment
– Servant-apostle paradox and covenantal dignity
– Flesh/Spirit contrast as two spheres of revelation
– Obedience of faith as lived allegiance
– Nations gathered for worldwide harvest
– Two revelations (righteousness and wrath)
– Suppression as culpable moral act, not mere ignorance
– Creation as transparent witness to God
– Failed glory and failed gratitude as root sins
– Darkened reason flowing from disordered worship
– Idolatry as anti-creation exchange and reversal of Genesis order
– Golden calf pattern of repeated rebellion
– Sin as fundamental exchange
– Wrath as active giving-over in history
– Body as spiritually significant
– Truth exchanged for lies
– Worship as the center of the matter
– Created order having moral meaning
– Desire requiring testing by God’s Word
– Threefold descent pattern (glory → truth → bodily practice)
– Rejected knowledge becoming corrupted knowledge
– Sin spreading into all social bonds
– Speech as revelation of heart condition
– Family obedience as foundational
– Hardness of heart as dehumanization
– Death as the wage of sin
– Public applause of evil as culture’s turning point
– Universal guilt preparing for gospel need
The insights are reorganized for clarity but not lost.
## 3. THEOLOGICAL ACCEPTABILITY ✓
The wording maintains balance across Calvinist, Catholic, and Orthodox sensibilities:
– Treatment of providence and human planning (“Paul plans, but God directs”) avoids determinism while affirming sovereignty
– Grace and obedience are held together without suggesting works-righteousness
– The body’s spiritual significance (verses 24-27 section) respects sacramental understanding while remaining accessible
– Judgment and mercy are both presented without minimizing either
– No language that would alienate any of these traditions
## 4. READABILITY ✓
The simplified version is noticeably more concise while retaining substance. Paragraphs are shorter, bullet-point insights are crisper, and the overall arc moves more smoothly. The conclusion is tightened without becoming thin.
## 5. TRINITARIAN/CHRISTOLOGICAL READINGS ✓
Christological depth is preserved as real, edifying insight without being hedged or overstated:
– “Jesus is both David’s Son and God’s mighty Son” (no distancing; states it directly as fulfilled messianic reality)
– “The risen Jesus is not only Israel’s King. He is Lord over all.” (clear affirmation)
– “Jesus shares the honor of the Father” / “Jesus shares the honor of the Father” in the greeting (plain statement of his divine dignity without qualification)
– “The same Jesus who came in humility now stands revealed in power” (balanced, not split into two separate beings)
These avoid the hedging trap while not forcing stronger formulation than the Standard version warranted.
## 6. PASTORAL TONE ✓
The content teaches believers directly with zero distancing language. Phrases like “This teaches you,” “This shows you,” “This reminds you,” and “Paul shows you” are direct address, not anthropological observation. The tone consistently speaks *to* the Christian community, not *about* it.
## 7. YOUNG-EARTH / OLD-EARTH ACCEPTABILITY ✓
Language regarding creation is timeline-neutral:
– “The sun, sky, earth, life, order, and beauty all point beyond themselves” (works under either view)
– “God made man and woman with purpose, and His design teaches truth about life and the body” (describes purpose without method)
– “Creation is not random. God made it with purpose.” (neutral on mechanism)
Nothing presupposes timing or evolutionary mechanism.

## Assessment
This simplified version accomplishes its task with integrity. The deeper insights are genuinely preserved—not stripped or flattened—and the language is authentically more accessible without becoming superficial. The theological balance across traditions is maintained, the pastoral tone is consistent, and there is no hedging language or distancing posture.
The few archaic or technical terms that remain (“reprobate,” “vile passions,” “ordinance,” “covenant breakers”) are directly from the Bible text, and the Simpler version provides sufficient explanatory context around each. Changing the actual Bible language would actually weaken the connection to Scripture that readers need to see.
NO RECOMMENDED CHANGES NEEDED AT ALL
